The Department was established in 1994. The curriculum of the Masters Degree focuses on the study of Political theory/thought, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Public Administration, Developmental Studies, Research Methodology, Indian Politics etc. The program is designed to enhance theoretical understanding relating to political processes in the contemporary socio-economic and institutional order and to develop methodological skills. The Department also emphasizes the study of North East India.
