Brief Profile of the Department

Department of Philosophy started its journey under Tripura University in July,1994 with the intake capacity of forty (40) having five (05) numbers of Guest teachers. Later on, it has been increased. At present it has eighty (80) intake capacity along with six (6) numbers of designated faculty members. The academic performances of the students are excellent. More than 95% of the students come out successful in every academic year, out of which at least 30% securing 55% or above marks in their credit. Two scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degree, three scholars have submitted their theses for the award of Ph. D. degree. Ten scholars are carrying out their Ph.D. work in this department. Three students have qualified themselves in UGC conducted NET examination, and one has become SLET qualified. All of them have been selected and absorbed in Government Degree Colleges as Asst. Professors, through Tripura Public Service Commission. The department has arranged and organised seminars, discussion, lectures on state, national and international levels individually and conjointly. They are as follows: Seminar on ‘‘Nimbarka Philosophy and World Peace’’, jointly with the Dept. of Sanskrit, Tripura University and World Nimbarka Parisad in 2005, (ii) National Seminar on “Mingled Voices: Literature and Philosophy,’’ in collaboration with English, Bengali, Sanskrit departments of Tripura University in 2006. (iii) National Seminar on ‘‘Basic Values Embodied in Indian Culture and their Relevance in National Reconstruction with special Reference to the Gita, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi” sponsored by Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR), New Delhi, in 2008. Every year as a part of the Teacher’s Day programme, this department has been organising and arranging seminars, discussions, lecture programmes to commemorate the great teacher and philosopher S. Radhakrishnan. The department has been publishing a departmental journal entitled ‘Pratyaya’.
