Brief Profile of the Department

The Department of Mathematics at Tripura University boasts a rich legacy of institutional transformation in Northeast India. Its origins trace back to 1967 with the post-graduate wing at M B B College, which later merged into the Calcutta University Post Graduate (CUPG) Centre in September 1976. The Department initially followed the Calcutta University’s pure mathematics curriculum till 1978 when the department introduced it’s own curriculum blending both pure and applied mathematics.

On October 2, 1987, the department merged into the newly established state-funded Tripura University with just three faculty members and 12 students. Its growth accelerated significantly on July 2, 2007, when the institution was elevated to a Central University. Expanding its academic horizons, the department introduced a five-year Integrated Master’s Degree (IMD) program in 2011 alongside its post-graduate courses.

Today, it is a full-fledged department powered by nine dedicated faculty members. It is highly regarded for student success, consistently producing qualifiers in prestigious national exams like NET, SLET, and GATE. Supported by major funding bodies like DST-FIST, UGC, CSIR, and NBHM, the department maintains a vibrant research ecosystem. Faculty members publish widely in reputed international journals across diverse fields, including Algebra, Geometry, Topology, Functional Analysis, Summability Theory, Fuzzy Set Theory, Control Theory, Image Processing, and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Notably, the present senior faculty member, Prof. B.C. Tripathy is ranked among the world’s top 2% of scientists by Stanford University. This research excellence is underscored by a strong doctoral program, having produced 63 Ph.D. graduates with 22 scholars currently pursuing their degrees.
