Brief Profile of the Department

The department imparts knowledge of contemporary theories and methods of Linguistics to students and promotes research on languages of India with special reference to tribal languages. Topics of teaching include traditional areas of linguistics, languages of South-Asian families with special focus on Tibeto-Burman family, and endangered languages. Areas of research include historical linguistics, languages of Dravidian and Tibeto-Burman families, phonology, morphology, semantics, sociolinguistics, syntax, and translation. The department is actively engaged in field work and language documentation related to languages of Bodo-Garo-Koch and Kuki-Chin-Naga subgroups of Tibeto-Burman language family.

The Department of Linguistics and Tribal Languages endeavours to pursue and maintain comprehensive, dynamic, innovative, sustainable, and expandable programmes of academic excellence and social impact in all frontier areas of linguistic studies.

Mission

The mission of the department is to disseminate the knowledge of language sciences in Tripura. The department aims to achieve this mission by providing state-of-the-art training in linguistics to its students and intends to turn them into world-class linguists.
