Brief Profile of the Department

The Department of Commerce was established in the year 1988 under the Faculty of Arts & Commerce with a vision of providing excellence in the fields of Commerce by imparting value based education, training and research. Since its inception, the primary aim of the Department has been to make the student diagnose and respond to change in social realities through the development and application of knowledge. The aim of the department is to focus on a skill based outreach programme that would help the student to serve the society efficiently across the wide range of emerging humanitarian challenges in the globalized era. The department is making its utmost effort to make the Department the world class best place for Commerce education taking different layers of academics, research, outreach and extension activities.

In 1988, the Master's in Commerce (M.Com.) Programme was first introduced in the Department; and then the Ph.D. Programme in Commerce was started from 1993 onward. Initially, the Department started its Post Graduate Programme without any specialization but the thrust area of teaching, learning and research was Accounting and Control. As a part of third pillar of extension programme, the Department started the Bachelor of Business Administration Programme in 2004; and later on due to the outgrowth of this programme it was shifted to Department of Business Management when the full fledged Management Department started its journey in 2007. The Post Graduate Diploma in Trade, Transport and Communication (PGDTTC) was started in 2006. This was first of its kind of Diploma Course started not only in the north eastern region of India but also one of the few in India, too. The Department started the Specialization in "Accounting" and "Finance" from 2016 onward. The Post Graduate Diploma in Finance and Taxation (PGDFT) was started in 2016.

The Integrated Masters Degree in Commerce (IMDC) was started in 2021 onward with 30 number of seat capacity with the option of exit on successful completion of six semesters with B.Com (Hons) degree and lateral entry in the Seventh Semester (subject to fulfilment of eligibility criteria) for the M. Com. Degree.

Vision

From its inception, the Department is committed to integrate all facets of business and commerce to educate and train competent human resource globally suitable for industry, business and service sector; and to equip and encourage them to start their own ventures in urban or rural areas benefitting both the classes and masses.

We are dedicated to secure and deliver knowledge through teaching, research and extension; and to seek continuous improvement in the quality of education to remain globally competitive.

Goals

  • To consolidate, strengthen and update the existing programmes incorporating more and more practical components in the syllabus
  • To foster research in core areas of accounting and finance
  • To encourage research in regional studies with special reference to the need of the north eastern region of India, in general and the state of Tripura, in particular that too of interdisciplinary nature
  • To keep regular interaction with other universities in the north eastern region of India and entering into MOUs for academic exchange programme
  • To undertake extension and consultancy activities
  • To adopt appropriate methods of assessment for evaluation of performance of learners
  • To improve soft skills of the learners to make them globally competent
