Brief Profile of the Department

The Department of Bengali was established in 1977 in the erstwhile Post Graduate Centre of Calcutta University. In 1987, it was integrated part of the Faculty of Arts & Commerce when Tripura University was established.

New Syllabus (CBCS) has been introduced from the session 2016.

Thrust area of the Syllabus & Research Programs:

  • Old, Medieval & Modern Literature & Language.
  • Historical & Socio Cultural background of Bengali Literature.
  • Bengali Literature of North East India & Bangladesh.
  • Historical, Cultural& Socio-economic background of Bengali Literature in Tripura.
  • Modern Bengali Literature: Novel, Short-Stories, Poetry, Drama.
  • Tagore Studies.
  • Folk Studies.
  • Tribal Literature and Languages.

Special Contribution of The Department:

  • Diploma course in Kokborok & Research in Kokborok Grammer, the major tribal language of Tripura was started by the Bengali Department. (Now Kokborok is being taught in a separate Department).
  • Research works being carried out on Regional History, Culture & Literature of Tripura.
