Brief Profile of the Centre

Under 11th plan guidelines of the UGC, the Centre for Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy has been established in Tripura University in the month of April, 2008, with adequate infrastructure and necessary logistics. To make the Indian society truly egalitarian, the institution of higher learning need to address the issue of social exclusion and inclusion. The primary space where ‘Exclusion’ can be studied understood and first transcended are the Universities which, can and must act as a beacon for society. The UGC has therefore decided to support research on the issue of social exclusion which has theoretical as well policy importance. The focus of such research will be social exclusion related to dalits, tribals and religious minorities. The idea is to establish a teaching-cum-research centre in Tripura University to pursue this noble cause. The CSSEIP of Tripura University is one of the 35 of such centres established under 10th and 11th plan guidelines of the UGC.

Functions of the Centre

The type of intellectual activities that the CSSEIP, Tripura University will be engaged in will include: Undertaking M.Phil and Ph.D Supervision in collaboration with other departments of the faculty Social Science and Humanities Collecting information on social exclusion and building up a Data base Carrying out detailed analysis based on the socio-economic data generated by government agencies Organizing regularly conference, seminar, symposia and workshops on the theme of social exclusion Publishing regularly the Research Findings of the Faculty and students Organizing public lecturer on the subject by eminent scholars Reaching out to scholars, especially young scholars in other universities and colleges through an active programme of inviting Visiting Faculty Establishing links with Civil Society Organizations engaged in combating Social Exclusion Short-term Orientation courses for political leaders, Parliamentarians, Government Officials, trade unionists and media personalities and subsequent generation of adequate literature on the issue, Teaching courses at the M. A and M. Phil levels, leading eventually to full-fledged M. Phil and even M. A programme in Social Exclusion studies.

Vision of the centre / Major achievements

The vision of this teaching-cum-research centre is to make the people acquainted with the Indian constitutional objectives. The Centre is working for developing the understanding of the nature, extent, and forms of social exclusion, discriminations at an empirical level and formulating policies for protecting the rights of marginalized section people like, ST,SC,OBC and minorities. The centre is a pioneer in introducing PGDTES course in NE region. The CSSEIP, TU has been fast emerging as an excellent hub for extension activities as well as research and development. The CSSEIP, TU has been actively engaged in addressing the issues pertaining to Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy.

The Centre has proved itself an academic vehicle of the Tripura University for aiding and promoting excellence in research and development activities. It has been conducting courses on Tribal (PGDTES), PhD, seminars and workshops on social and economic issues concerning disadvantaged and marginalized sections of the society. While the Centre has been striving for conceptualization of issues on discrimination, deprivation, exploitation and exclusion, it has been also exploring the ways and means for effecting social justice, equity, fair play and inclusion in Indian society in general and North-Eastern societies in particular. With optimism and confidence, we look forward for sustained growth and development of the Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy. The empirical research result and action research of this Centre will be helpful to create such an ambiance in the society for social inclusion irrespective of caste, clan and religion. The Centre is a pioneer in introducing PGDTES course in the NE region. The activities of the Centre are well appreciated by the Government of India Institutions namely; UGC-NAAC, MHRD and organizations like NABARD, ICSSR, ONGC, Ministry of Tribal Affairs (GoI) have been involved themselves as financial partners of this endeavor.
