Our motto is to make you fly high with full of confidence and attitude on the wings of Skill.

Brief Profile:

Rubber Technology deals with the transformation of rubber into useful products, such as automobile tires, automotive parts, conveyer Belts, hoses, rubber mats, balloons, shoes, rubber bands, eraser etc. These products are manufactured from different forms of rubber such as natural rubber latex, synthetic rubber latex, natural rubber, synthetic rubber etc. These materials are processed to make a wide range of items.

The most important one is natural rubber (NR). It consists of 45% of the worldwide rubber consumption. Natural rubber plays an important socio-economic role. It provides a significant part of the economical benefit from natural rubber production. As a natural product its properties are influenced by environmental and seasonal variations. Natural rubber has a unique property which shows strain crystallization, making the material exceptionally strong.

It plays a vital role in Indian economy due to its use and importance all over the world. The rubber industry in India has a turnover of 32000 crore (2014-15) and demand growth rate of 8% per year. India is the third largest producer and fifth largest consumer of natural rubber and synthetic rubber together in the world. It caters the need in defence sector (civil, aviation, aeronautics) railways, agriculture, transport, textile engineering industries, pharmaceuticals, mines, plants, ports, family planning programs, hospitals and sports. Rubber products have significant contribution in Export also covering every conceivable area.

Tripura ranks second in rubber production of India, next to Kerala. Superior quality of rubber is produced in Tripura. Among several natural rubber producing tree Heave brasiliensis is the most economically useful plant. It was first planted on a trial basis by the forest department of Tripura Government in 1963.

About 11,673 hectors of land was under rubber plantations in the state during 2010-11. However the Government of Tripura is planning to expand the coverage area under rubber cultivation to 85,094 hector by 2025-26.

The natural rubber latex obtained from the rubber trees are collected and exported as such. They are also exported by converting the latex into ribbed smoked sheet (RSS) to other states of India for value additions and manufacturing of finished articles. Since rubber plantation emerges as the core participant in the states economical development, the plantation of rubber trees. Government of Tripura is also encouraging entrepreneurs to establish rubber product industries so that they can produce the rubber goods themselves and export them to other states which in return will improve the economy of the state.

Above 40 million people of India are employed in Rubber Industries proving way of lives to their families. Moreover, the said industries are contributing above Rs. 40 billion each year to the National Exchequer through taxes, duties and other levis. Few Rubber Industries have already been set up in Tripura for making gloves, foot-ware etc and some new industries are coming up. These industries require trained man-power. To cater the industrial needs the rubber technology course is justifiable.

Out of 450 million jobs in India only 10% of them have their vocational training which are either formal or informal. 90% do not have any vocational training (Labour Bureau, GOI). Whereas in developed countries the skill labour quantum is 75% of the total.

Therefore, the University Grants Commission (UGC), India has launched a scheme on skills development based higher education as part of college/university education, leading to Bachelor of Vocation (B. Voc) Degree.

Tripura University has also become the part of the mammoth event introducing B. Voc Rubber Technology in 2015 in its regular academic activities. Fifty numbers of seats have been sanctioned by the UGC in this program. Its aim is to enable the B. Voc Rubber Technology graduates to meaningful participation in accelerating India’s economy by gaining appropriate employment, becoming entrepreneurs and creating appropriate knowledge.

The course is having multiple entry-exit option incorporating specific job roles, QP, NOS etc along with general education. The students, if they want, can even opt out of the program after the completion of one year of joining the program with “Diploma in Rubber Technology” to their credit. Those who opt out from the program after completing two years are awarded an “Advanced Diploma in Rubber Technology”. After the completion of three years, the students will be awarded “B. Voc in Rubber Technology” equivalent to Bachelor Degree. The complete program in B. Voc, Rubber technology is of six semesters. It is highly practical and job oriented program which provides hands-on training to the students. The University is having MoU with NSDC, RSDC, RRII, Kottayam, and AIRIA and also planning to sign MoU with ATMA, IRMRA for Academic and Industrial Cooperation.

The B. Voc Rubber Technology students have visited several renowned rubber industries in various parts of India like, MRF, K. R. Industries, JK Fenner, Taylors Rubber Private Limited, St Mary’s Rubber Pvt. Ltd., L & P Treads, Rubek Rubbers, Rubberized Coir Mattress manufacturing Industry “Rubco”, Venkadathu Rubber Band Industry etc. The students have undergone training in various institutes like

RRII, Kottayam, Rubber Research Station, Agartala, IRMRA, Thane, Rubber Technology Centre, IIT Kharagpur, IIE, Guwahati during their semesters. They have participated in various rubber conferences also. There are several industrial collaborations for internship in industries viz. JK Tyre & Industries/HASETRI, Mysuru, Puja Fluid Seals Pvt. Ltd., Pune, Royal Elastomers pvt. Ltd. and Holdwell Components Pvt. Ltd., Raipur.
