Brief Profile of the Centre

The Centre for Tribal Languages was established under the Tripura University in the year 1999. Under this Centre a 1-year PG Diploma Course in Kokborok language and literature was introduced in 2002. Prior to introduction of the PG Diploma in Kokborok language and literature there was a certificate Course in Kokborok language introduced into the department of Bengali, Tripura University in the year 1994. Initially it was a 3 month certificate course. Later on a 6 month certificate course was introduced and it continued prior to introduction of the PG Diploma Course in 2002. The main objective of both the certificate and PG Diploma Course in Kokborok is to impart knowledge in Kokborok language and literature to the students of both the tribal and non-tribal communities. The centre is intending to undertake some linguistic projects on the tribal Languages of Tripura which is also the lingua franca in the hills. The centre started publishing an annual journal entitled ‘KHERENGBAR’ from 2013.
